INDUSTRY CELEBRATES SLOPE SAFETY AND INVITES NSP MEMBERS TO JOIN IN (12.15.08)

As ski areas embark on another (hopefully snowy) season, the ski/snowboard resort industry is planning several safety-related contests and events, and patrollers are invited to participate.

  • Safety Week: First, the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), in conjunction with resorts around the country, is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the annual National Safety Awareness Week, from Jan. 17-23, 2009. Ski areas use NSAW to promote slope safety to ski area guests and employees in a variety of creative ways, many which involve patrollers.
  • Hit Them With Your Best Shot: To celebrate the milestone anniversary, NSAA is hosting a Safety Week Photo Contest. Images must convey a safety message or show resort staff and/or guests engaging in Safety Week activities, and the winning photo will be used on the cover of the April issue of the NSAA Journal. Photos must be received by Feb. 16. Contact Troy Hawks at NSAA for more info.
  • Never Ski/Snowboard With Scissors: Finally, Jack Turner, the creative spirit behind Snow Monsters and other slope safety initiatives, has introduced Never Ski With Scissors, a search for original video clips that promote slope safety, courtesy and common sense. Anyone can enter; the only requirement is that videos depict a safety message for skiers and boarders in an interesting way and are 60 seconds or shorter. Here's an example from YouTube. Up to 50 entries will be selected for a film, Web and industry education program for national distribution. More info here.
